Climate change puts women’s health and rights at risk

CGC Co-Chair María Fernanda Espinosa, former President of the United Nations General Assembly, has—together with Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Evanna Corona van Vliet—co-written a timely op-ed examining the governance implications of the International Court of Justice’s landmark advisory opinion on climate change in the context of climate change and gender inequality.  The piece argues that the ruling strengthens international accountability by affirming states’ legal obligations to protect the climate system and uphold human rights, including women’s rights. As global leaders consdier how to implement the opinion, the authors call for gender-responsive climate governance that places women’s rights and leadership at the centre of climate policy and decision-making.
