CGC Co-Convenes UNDP Consultation

October 6, 2025

The Climate Governance Commission, in partnership with the UNDP Human Development Report Office, and the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health, co-convened a high-level consultation on Planetary Governance at The Hague Humanity Hub. The event brought together leading scholars, policymakers, and legal practitioners to explore governance pathways that safeguard interwoven human development and planetary well-being in an era of intensifying global challenges.

Serving as part of the global consultation process for the 2026 Human Development Report, discussions focused on bridging development and legal communities to identify principles for strengthening international governance and coordination across multilateral frameworks and international negotiations. The consultation highlighted how recent international legal developments — including recent advisory opinions from the ICJ, ITLOS, and IACtHR, and negotiations on the BBNJ Agreement and WHO Pandemic Agreement — can inform more coherent and accountable global governance for planetary health.

Participants emphasized the importance of systemic integration, regime interaction, and institutional innovation across the UN system to foster resilience, justice, and sustainability. Insights from the consultation will inform upcoming intergovernmental processes, including COP30, the BBNJ Preparatory Commission, and the 79th World Health Assembly, contributing directly to the 2026 Human Development Report.
