Expert Meeting to Enhance Global Environmental Governance

The New Institute’s Planetary Governance program convened an expert meeting to explore proposals aimed at strengthening global environmental governance in response to the urgent need for more effective stewardship of Earth's vital systems.

Key topics of discussion included proposals to reinforce the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the potential establishment of a Global Environment Agency (GEA). The meeting also examined interconnected initiatives under the program’s research agenda, such as international judicial and dispute resolution mechanisms, the expansion of global scientific assessment and reporting capacities for comprehensive Earth system monitoring, and the development of Earth system security frameworks.
